' Ajinomoto-Insud Manfredonia - The End of History
Cap.
The text of the press transmits it via teletype to all agencies, to major newspapers, the Ministry of State Holdings and that of Labour and other ministries, plus the Secretary of the Interior who was Hon . Vincenzo Russo.
The next day, albeit with a little blurb, were cited by all the most important newspapers, except "La Gazzetta del Mezzogiorno" in Bari, which published, on the third day following, a brief article on the editorial page Foggia, only after we had studded with numerous telexes and telephone calls, and signed on behalf of the provincial leaders of Trade Unions. And, for the first few days, there was nothing else. So the first
following Sunday, June 5th, we left the factory and blocked the only road that led to Manfredonia and the Gargano, delaying traffic for the first sunbathers and tourists on their way to the beaches of the Gargano and Siponto same in order to "illustrate", with ample detail, the reasons for the protest to every motorist. In the evening, another press release by telex to inform action and reactions of sympathy to motorists blocked.
Only in this way we had the honor of a visit by a correspondent of Manfredonia Gazzetta di Bari, while all the other newspapers began to take an interest to us in more detail. It also began to get interested politicians and local administrators, in the first line, the Communist mayor, Senator Michael Magno.
They were, however, seriously concerned about the authorities responsible for public order. First as a payroll office, then as Chief Accountant and finally as Head of Administration, I had always had a special relationship with Police and Commissioner.
In all the protests outside the factory, we always alongside the police public, in a sense, protecting our events. Never did anything special, because the country was small and we lived in a family: when we went on foot to occupy the town hall of Manfredonia, it was clear that all employees were waiting for us and they knew of our impending arrival.
was rather a surprise to everyone when almost all the staff left the establishment and spread on the road to Zapponeta, stopping at the level crossing, sitting on the train tracks, then blocking the railway line is that the road Foggia-Manfredonia provincial coast.
For a cause of work leading to the dismissal of an employee, the Magistrate of Manfredonia, Dr. Cappabianca, had taken some time ago, some hearings in that case directly in our factory, also to make a personal visit to some work environments, and on that occasion had got to know him and talk with him to the out its function, having wanted to be with me illustrate the operation of our computer.
The case ended with the approval of the dismissal for excessive morbidity "of the worker, was published in Massimario of Law, had a lot of echo in all the legal and business environments of the national territory, being the first of its kind after the statute of workers.
Mr. Praetor, concerned about the order result, we had received an informal and friendly invitation to be informed by Tavano and myself, on the situation inside the factory. The meeting we had to, so secretive, in the evening, the office staff of the District Court, in the presence of the town lawyer friend, and Honorary Magistrate, who had acted as an emissary.
Meanwhile, on my own, I continued to keep in telephone contact with the Office of Milan, until I began to call, late in the evening at the home of Dr. Yadama, chatting with him on the pretext of wanting to tell what happened factory, but with the aim of eliciting information about the intentions of the Japanese. Phone calls were leaving
the control room of the SIP in the office building, even if just a few days after beginning employment, all telephone lines were turned off. It was also turned off the teletype, but the one who had done so, not even thought of having to switch on the telephone line used in the teletype, which still had a telephone service operated in the SIP control unit.
Even during normal activity, the room was always locked and remained so during the occupation. For this reason, I did phone calls with the consent of a large part of the members of the "Trade Union Committee for the occupation of the factory."
fact, when they began to struggle and protest actions, it was clear to everyone that you could not just leave the leadership and initiative in the hands of the Council members in office, because, apart from a couple of good trade unionists, c 'was always that copings unreliable and that some indolent character, often from what was done to convince and, under the guise of the Democratic majority, was tipped on its side the balance, so it integrates with other works council members, all of which had already been part of other works councils, creating precisely this Committee.
Meanwhile, each on their own, everyone was busy with their knowledge. The head of production, chemical, sought other outlets, others that might be interested in our factory. The group of chemicals, in fact, tried to save the "strain" of bacteria that gave rise to the fermentation, but it defeats the purpose, perhaps because they did not know the specifications to keep it alive.
I kept the keys in the office safe in which were the original documents relating to permits and leases which closed in the vault, along with documents in a safe in which were preserved bearer passbooks with the famous "funds blacks" , which is not touched for a long time and that, however, had become a substantial sum but not decisive for corporate finance at the most would have to pay its contributions and withholding one month's salary.
There was no danger, even if the workers "occupied" the actual building of the administrative offices, camping out everywhere, but in any event, I took the keys to my house.
Fellow Tavano had, at one point, a "suggestion" by the friend's lawyer who had acted as emissary to the magistrate. Given that the management and ownership were fugitives, employees could apply for the seizure of the plant to protect earnings not yet paid and compensation for dismissal developed, perhaps with the ex ART.700 of urgency of the CPP, and "certainly" the magistrate gave a favorable opinion of the emergency procedure and the attachment. The only condition was that they had joined the appeal a number of employees, although in the minority.
The application was submitted, signed almost immediately by all employees and a good number of workers, while trying to persuade other workers to sign.
At this point came out of the ugliness of the whole environment and the mud that came up was in the fund. He went outside the party who had sold the new Director and trying to impose all of the suggestions that they did, but that was a reaction broken the news of the appeal to the Magistrate.
Perhaps, I suppose, that the Director with the gun always at his side, said that it was necessary "to avoid" that others would sign, perhaps angry and he said it with his Sicilian accent, but being a native of Milazzo, coming from Terni, when was angry, he spoke Umbrian-Roman. In any case, to prevent others would sign, it also resorted to unlawful means, to use a euphemism.
Meanwhile, since life, in every situation, continues its course, it happened in my house a new and happy event, so I was relieved by the Committee to continue the occupation of the factory, having to watch my wife and my other two children.
On my return to the factory, after ten days, my colleagues updated about the latest events and that is that the magistrate had accepted our application and invited the parties thirty days, seizing the factory in the meantime, the day of ' hearing, a group of "good" workers, in the sense of the term Manzoni, were placed to guard the entrance of the Magistrate's Court with the intent to discourage those who are convinced the last minute, they were going to sign the application directly into the hands of Magistrate, and used the same promoters.
also told me that during my absence, a group of chemicals Italian and English, in messisi contact our head of production, was asked to visit the factory. And
were undercover British envoys of the ICI, a large multinational chemical giant. Unfortunately, began some time ago, there was, throughout Italy and in certain circles, a great suspicion and rejection towards a true "multinational" who had become a derogatory term and offensive, because it stands for hungry people, hungry imperialists, exploiters of the poor worker.
The visit was, therefore, very fast, but emissaries of the chemical giant took the first contacts with the Japanese, in Milan, and my colleagues also knew the date, very close, the first scheduled meeting.
But colleagues also told me that it was now split the front occupants of the building: on the one hand there were employees and a handful of workers who trusted the words and opinions of them, on the other side v 'were the group of loyalists that copings psiuppino who served as director of terminal cap at the center the majority of workers who expected only a positive outcome of the case.
There was another party, and it was what he had resumed work with his old job or had developed, in order to bring money home, and these, not by showing the factory, were the target of epithets and abuse by all.
The worst thing however, was to learn that the threatening phone calls had begun to address employee strangers and slanderous phone calls to the wives of someone, always used.
Because of the so-called "contrary" there were workers who had always respected me, I sought the opportunity and I went to sit in their midst, trying to make them talk. In a sense, question and talk to the people has always been my job, and I can always work well, they knew it and tried to evade my pressing questions, including escaping my eye, and one even tried to dissuade me speaking jargon of the Camorra, which I pretended to understand.
This officer, though in a very reserved, he promised to keep me informed on the negotiations between ICI and our Japanese, promise kept, when I told Circulation disappointing and negative encounter. Menara
Tired of the bush, in a phone call the night with Yamada position specific question on the progress of negotiations, but what he said he did not know anything because it was not his task - "It's not my job , "-
was a colossal lie because his presence, alongside the CEO, was normal and steady, otherwise you could not tell what it was back a fare. Mi arrabbiai e ne uscii:
- «Yamada-San!
- chiese in italiano.
- «Non was no need for advisers, "- I replied. - "It 's something you always in such cases. Every trade unionist knows! Dr. Hood also knows! E 'lawyer, should know! Or not? "-
- 'No! He did not know that! He has not provided! For this he paid and was "removed" '- I thought he had used this term instead of "thrown away".
Then he continued: - "After I studied!" - Was his usual way of saying that it had deepened. - "Many similar cases, and never, ever did this to court. Anyway, your choice this will delay the resolution of the case, "-
- "What is the solution? Which solution is this? "- I asked once, but remained silent and the conversation ended well.
This was also the last of lonely without my phone calls and PBX in the late evening hours, because during the call, I noticed through the glass hammer, which, in the corridor someone was going back and forth. When finished, the hall was full of cigarette smoke, but there was none.
I thought it was someone who had intended to listen to my conversation, but I am not worried about this because, for the most part, I spoke in English. Only after some time, a friend told me the name of the person, confessing that he had given the job to protect my safety, but that person was also one of the bodyguards of the copings.
Meanwhile, our friend chemist, former head of production, maintaining contact with the technicians of the British ICI, however, we did not know, at first, the result of the meeting held with the Japanese, even though we had knew that was not positive. When, finally, re-established contacts told him only:
- "There was no negotiation! There can be no negotiation with someone who does not want to sell! Because who wants to sell, as a rule, show their wares! Or not? "-
Il giorno dell’udienza la proprietà giapponese, tramite il proprio avvocato, un luminare milanese di alto grido sceso, bontà sua, fino a Manfredonia, rese ufficiale questa notizia, stated that negotiations were well advanced, that in the short term would be evaluated the offer and the business plan of investment and production, according to the conditions imposed by the Japanese, had to provide full employment for all employees.
The magistrate could not help but take note of the offer and, hoping for a rapid conclusion of the case, rejected the appeal and quashed the arrest. The Great Mayor made a commitment that he would personally followed, alongside the union, negotiations and business plan.
In fact, after a few days, he stared at the meeting in Bari, on the premises of the Puglia region and invited assessori regionali, provinciali e comunali, sindaci e sindacalisti, mancavano solo le autorità religiose e militari e la banda municipale.
In attesa dell’incontro e del bilancio, parlando tra di noi impiegati, si considerava che, normalmente, qualsiasi industriale che sta per investire i suoi soldi in una nuova iniziativa, preferisce mostrarsi in casa propria, cioè presso l’associazione of industry, or in a hotel room charge, at its own expense: this show in a political and institutional, we sounded like a purely political move, for other purposes rather than to invest.
the same day of the meeting in Bari, the package arrived at my house with the Company Financial Statements "General Investments" Roman.
It was founded in October 1976 with a registered capital of 200 million pounds and, as the first operation, had made an "investment" of 90 million for the purchase of a "flat" in Rome, Via dei Parioli, whose value at the time and in that way, it could refer ad un abbaino o un sottoscala.
The last twenty-five pages telling how to freeze the blue fish, as they would be sold this "product" as it would be carried to the "transformation" of the production departments, while the "general services" existing, would be used by the new production. No business plan to explain costs, revenues, investment and production capacity.
At the time, and for several months, inspired by some "guru" who wanted to solve "all" the problems of the Italian economy, almost every day we read in the press of the goodness of blue fish on the rest of the catch, its protein content, of very low cost and the fact that it was a true "wealth" of our seas all things true and acceptable.
But now, I have not heard that, somewhere in the world, there is, or there has ever been, a factory for frozen sea food, even if on schedule, and the applicant returns to the press, especially in summer, the idea of \u200b\u200benhancing the fish.
The "solution"
After the meeting in Bari, Puglia, all trade unionists and the Mayor of Manfredonia consider our story is virtually complete and successful.
The local correspondent of "The Gazzetta del Mezzogiorno ", which still did not sign his own name, not being enrolled in the Order of Journalists, which until then had never shown" deployed "on the side of workers, every day trumpeting the happy resolution of our story, citing ever, with first and last name, "our benefactor", the buyer who submitted to the Mayor's notorious "Plan".
Not so thought all employees, let alone our employees that we had gutted the stock of the acquiring company, we had studied the "Plan" industrial, not find anything really industrial.
Now Assemblies of the factory, in the local canteen, became a real happening-show, with the copings, which now openly called on the undecided to stand beside him to have a secure job in the "new" factory of frozen and, most importantly, finding converts.
Unfortunately, our hesitations and our doubts, some of the other party, inspired or suggested ineffable neo-unionist, came up with a joke:
- "The employees do not accept this Company because, to them, will be used the task of "cutting off the head of the fish to be frozen" and do not like it! "-
Unfortunately, I repeat, this beat, and still I can not explain why, in a sense was accepted as "credible" by many of our workers.
When someone preached that employees were no real guarantees the continuation of the company, there were no specific assurances on the maintenance of employment, when you said that our plant was technologically advanced and that, freezing, no existing machinery would be used, and even installation of the "services" were oversized compared to the needs, at some point, there was always someone who came out with that joke, became a real torment, and the conversation ended, between grimaces and winks.
No one could think that the people were employed graduates, all with a qualifying experience that no one ever attempted to humiliate, not to satisfy the envy and hatred of some "fly-coachmen," ignorant and arrogant.
always
advantage of my "confidence" with my friends, workers, and I tried to talk with them, while most of the time, were themselves trying to talk to me, to be reassured that the solution lay ahead and that I thought absolutely impossible.
One day, I was asked if I was willing to talk with members of the Committee to provide some explanations and express my point of view. I agreed and introduced myself to the full Committee met, with some more member in the sense that he had been admitted to attend any of those who "shouted" more and stronger in the assemblies.
The first questions I was asked by his Collicelli, with whom I had interviewed a continuous and open and honest, so I started well prepared and tried to explain everything that I thought of the "new" factory but, above all, pausing to demolish the so-called "Plan for investment and industrialization and the balance of the new company.
knew perfectly, and for a long time, everyone present, and I felt able to assess accurately the potential for learning and expression of each of them, so when someone gave me the questions with words that could not be part of own vocabulary, I began to get nervous and increasingly, instead of responding calmly, attacked and ruled until I got up and walked away, but not before saying: - "I came to explain my thoughts, not to be judged by you! In here, there's no height you can judge whether what I say is true or false. And then, I do not care to convince anyone! I see that you do not understand: the Works is dead and we are all unemployed! Therefore, "every man for himself," everyone is looking for a job on their own, "-
In practice, I made a single beam of friends and enemies and I regretted it immediately, even if for the rest of the story , I kept my attitude of independence. Only after a while I realized that was too easy for my enemies, to silence me nervous.
However I could not help but continue my conversation with those who were the workers most sincere friends. They assured me that, in any case, they would have watched the real intentions of the buyer, by providing precise and reassuring conditions at factory of the "new" master. My fellow employees, however, spoke of potentially interested companies to take over the factory for the production of new dietary products.
Then, for reasons of family needs, I had to leave for an extended period, employment in the factory to assist my family and, indeed, I moved to another country to be near the hospital where I was admitted to the newborn. The distance allowed me to reflect on the whole story and at the same time, to review everything with external eye.
went back to the factory after nearly a month and returning to talk with fellow employees and workers with friends, I realized that everyone, but tutti, ripetevano le stesse cose, gli stessi concetti che avevo ascoltato prima di andar via, ed a volte con le stesse parole e con le stesse frasi.
For one reason or retention of modesty did not speak to all of the telegram, but only to a dear and valuable employee who, in turn, informed me that he was also invited him along to someone else who pointed me out.
In fact, the appointed day, I returned to the factory received by Rag. Fraser who, in turn, had already made the company take action for cleaning and disinfecting of rooms and toilets.
- "The other day we thought your" collaborator "with all his entourage of" good "supporters," - said to Fraser, with my usual diplomacy elephant. I did not want me to miss the joke, even to test the relationship between him and that copings that, I knew I was not very well thought of and considered the good old accountant. He moves only one shoulder, without speaking.
Fraser told me that he had been the signature for banking operations, our task was to update the accounts with the operations he had carried out directly by the office of Milan which gave us the notes. He cashed the funding by the Deutsche Ajinomoto, Hamburg, and had failed to close the accounts of anticipation and bank accounts in the past had paid vendors who had taken legal action.
Quando qualcuno dei miei collaboratori, specie le ragazze, mi chiedeva le ragioni di questo odio e avversione nei nostri confronti, io raccontavo they tried listening to the shock, after about a month, the same words from people who loved and respected.
explain it all with the fact that, with starvation, with the fixed idea turned into something only ever that you can not control or change, it creates a kind of insanity, or at least a level of discomfort that allows to reason about things and see them in their proper viewing angle.
- "Besides," - I pointed out: - "try to put yourself in the shoes of a family head, every day, comes home and knows that her loved ones to expect from him a word of hope, a story that he can not give! Then he has to tell that some were called back into service! That these receive the salary and not him! Goes to explain to his wife he has to do the shopping, those who do work other than his, "-
I finished all the tasks entrusted to me, while at the same time called me to do to find other employment opportunities, having occasion to consider several offers , pending the arrival to fruition the promises made to me by friends EFIM Group.
In practice, most of the time in those last days of "service" at the Ajinomoto, the past, working on writing and responding to newspaper ads for recruitment in the company of a colleague, stranger , because, after paying the suppliers and have updated the records, there was not much else to do except manage the staff on duty, but very bland.
In fact, one Saturday afternoon, having called all the staff on duty, came running to the Rag. Fraser Manfredonia to make deliveries and greet me with a brief farewell ceremony. When informed those present that, from now on, with my resignation, the head of establishment became my substitute, one of the girls who aspired to my seat, let out a loud voice:
- "Ah! Because he was until now the Head? "- The good
Fraser also handed the keys to the safe, which contained was exactly what he had left us some time before, plus all the books and records be certified, and this was November 7, 1977, while still being discussed, in all places, of what must be the future of the factory on which But I have nothing to say because it happened just after my departure, and therefore should basarmi riferitemi on news from other, very often inaccurate and conflicting with each other.
purchaser of the factory with the attorney I've never had to do, at least until a few years ago, but for other interests and my other work commitments.
considerations
The "flight" of the Japanese was a defeat! A defeat for the workers who, rather than stay together, they acted no more, no less, who like cocks Renzo, pecking each other. And among the cocks you put me there too. It 'was a defeat for the mayor, who has lost a good source of employment for the workers because they have left to fight alone, the Provincial Secretary ICFTU, all focusing on winning converts in Anic, too' its chemical industry, then became ENICHEM.
E 'was a defeat for the country, even if you can not pass the buck to anyone: the Mayor and all politicians, had little to do to withdraw decision by the Japanese. Just a note could be made to the Mayor because he and his collaborators took as a single point of the CGIL union, the "duty" of directors, but this was the order of things and could not be otherwise.
E 'was a resounding defeat for State Holdings who are completely disinterested but the factory and can not be an excuse, it is to clarify that a bit' all fabbrichette of PS, at the time, did the same end.
Volendo confrontare invece the two realities, we must consider that the "small", Ajinomoto, was private property and then reduced to its essentials and hid from view her jewelry outside, though, with its modularity, a priori, the possibility of enlargement . While the ANIC, continuing the policy begun by Enrico Mattei, had to satisfy a requirement essentially "political" and therefore be large, mammoth and "visible", even at night. The "private" occupied the right number of employees, "political" and largheggiava Scialò.
Anise or ENICHEM, already at the time of its construction, was a plant unsustainable, since it was known that those productions was better to place them in third world countries, which, in fact, ENI began to do immediately after having completed the construction in Manfredonia. But all this now, it remains a purely academic discourse.
In this regard, I am in mind the meeting with a large and "old" Shipping Agent of Bari for the importation of one of the last "batch" of French beet molasses, we rely, for the customs , one of the oldest and largest Maritime Agents Bari from which I took myself to regularize documents, after having made them sign on by Dr. Barletta. Cipiani.
While waiting for it to complete the formalities and documentation, the Agency's two owners, father and son, to entertain, they wanted to present their elderly parent and grandparent, ninety years old, and already the son of the founder of the dynasty. I was introduced as "the Director of the Fabric of Japanese Manfredonia" and my enthusiasm from the old man, who wished to inform me how she loved him particularly for having visited Manfredonia, for the first time at an early age with the parent, as a result, there bring it back whenever he had the opportunity to work.
Then I said: - "My father always told me that if the Port had Manfredonia, Bari to be dead, "- in particular the last sentence I said in the dialect of Bari first and then in Italian, then continued: -" See, my father told me, this country has all that is missing from Bari to live better but was founded by King Manfred, who was one who was only great things, but who, having been excommunicated by the Pope, not only could not see his work completed, but has had all its major initiatives gone wrong! " -
And again: - "When I asked him why there was no Porto Manfredonia, he replied: Because, fortunately for us, there are many manfredoniani to Manfredonia! I was small then and did not understand this explanation. I understood later in the year when we talked, we talked and the port, in Manfredonia, you could never do that! Now, tell me who made the port and finally came the first factories! I'm happy, I'm really happy! "-
When we went by the old, I wanted to explain to my guests, of course, the old man had understood that I came EniChem, failing of course the word" Japanese ", but that, however:
- 'It was really, for me, an encounter interesting and instructive, as well as enjoyable. I support and agree with every word you said, especially because I am a genuine and true "Manfredonia"! " - And I do not even realize they had them!
